Wal-Mart sells out of $200 PC!!
Did you think they would last or something??
We had a gut feeling about Wal-Mart's Everex PC! I mean it comes at a $200 price point and you get a whole PC system, who can beat that?? This does appear to be the early results of putting Linux in front of Middle America! And quite franklythe results are overwhelmingly positive -- Wal-Mart's online warehouse has already sold out of the cheaporoonie (new word created here) Linux box, and users both savvy and new are filing enthusiastic reviews. Of course those users are cheapskates that don't care about the ultimate rig, but that's a different story. This baby has been touted as a "green" machine, it has a 1.5 Ghz VIA C7 CPU embedded in a Mini-ITX motherboard, 512MB of RAM and a not so shabby 80GB hard drive. Generally, this would simply mark it as unacceptably low-end for use with modern software. By using the fast Enlightenment desktop manager (instead of heavier-duty alternatives like Gnome or KDE), the makers say it's more responsive than Vista is, even on more powerful computers. Well Vista sucks anyways, lol. But this baby packs more than enough heat for such a slim price tag. We expect that consumers of this PC don't expect much but are amazed to see that this baby performs rather decently considering it's emaciated pricetag! While it is still too early to judge, it does look like the savvy marketers at Team Ubuntu are making a valiant effort to become a stronger player in the ongoing OS wars currently dominated by a certain "M" word ;). The user-interface itself has a bunch of google-themed icons and is sometimes dubbed the "Google" OS, but they are just icons and the big G has not played it's hands in the PC OS wars quite yet. After all, they want to get their feet wet first with their newly introduced "Android" OS for the mobile market. It looks like everyone wants a piece of the OS pie, so stay tuned as this bitter war has just begun. We got our money on the "M" word. But, you can really count out the underdog, especially when he is charging nothing for his OS!!
